Going on 5 Months!

Halloween was a lot of fun. Abby had a costume…not sure what exactly it was. When we bought it 6 months ago, we had thought it was a cow, didn’t even think anything of it. But when we went to Chris’ work, somebody said, Oh what a cute panda! Haahaa, that’s when Chris and I started to wonder what exactly it is! It’s got a pink nose like a cow, but the tail of a panda. So, in Toby’s words, she was a “Pandow.” We didn’t go trick or treating though…thought it might be kinda weird for us parents to go around asking for candy =) Maybe next year…
She started to blow bubbles. But with a pool inside her mouth, she’s basically just blowing out all her drool. heehee. She also started eating her toes! Her mouth has a tractor beam for things. But it’s so funny when her toes start heading towards her mouth. She slowly pulls them towards her mouth, but she’s looking at me with a careful eye like, I wonder what Mama’s going to say or do when I do this!

Four Months

FOUR months old today! We measured her spiky hair this wk and it stands almost 3 inches proud! heehee. It’s funny after she wakes up because the back of her hair is flat and then it sticks straight up.

She loves to work on the computer already! She took over when Chris was on Facebook. Move over, Daddy. I got it! Ha!

Week 17

Abby is starting to get super interactive, it’s so much fun! She smiles, laughs, and coos a lot now. There are times she wakes up and becomes a chatterbox and you can’t get a word in there! Still haven’t figured out quite yet if she’s a shy one though. My favorite this week is when Chris imitates her laugh and gets her to laugh like that. She throws her head back and lets out a “eh HEH!” Once she gets on a roll, they take turns, all while I’m laughing my socks off on the sidelines. It cracks me up!

Think she discovered her toes this week, she’s been lifting her legs up in the air and stares at her feet and toes while grabbing them with her hands. We are in full discovery mode! She’s starting to grab other things with her fingers too. She’s scratched my face with her sharp fingernails a couple times already!, but usually she’s pretty gentle. She LOVES to suck on her hand too, so watch out for those wet slobbery hands when you’re holding her!

We went to Target three weeks ago and I had tried to refrain from dressing her in all pink like pink threw up on her or something. The lady at the cash register said “What a cute baby boy you have!” Ummm…OK fine, I guess that one was my fault since I had her dressed in white and gray clothes. But didn’t the lady see the cute pink and purple butterfly on her stroller? She could pass as a boy. (And you might also want to know, a lot of people also stake their life on our next kid being a boy since she looks so much like one!) So, this week, I’m dressing her in more pink now. We went to Macy’s and someone passes by and says what a cute baby I have. Boy or girl? Ack! I think it’s just inevitable that some people tend to look at the faces and everything else drowns out, like their pink clothes, pink blankets, pink and purple butterfly! =)

Great Auntie Angela visited from LA this week and we all went to dinner at a local chinese restaurant. We saw Kristi Yamaguchi there! She is MUCH smaller and petite in person! No picture though =) She and her family left soon after we got there.

Week 16

It’s so funny when we tickle her. A few weeks ago, she had no reaction whatsoever. Then she started opening her mouth wide, with a total toothless silent laugh, almost as if she doesn’t know how to contain herself but nothing comes out! So we think she’ll be ticklish. haahaa. She can hold up her head pretty well now and she likes to use her legs to stand. It can get pretty tiring holding her up after a while! We also noticed she likes to be held for her to nap and it has to be absolutely quiet in order for her to stay asleep! So…we end up tip toeing around the house and try not to wake her. It’s almost impossible to get her to nap when we’re out because she wakes up to everything.

Week 15

She rolled over this week! – twice! Once with Chris and then once with me. From her back to her front. And then her arm got stuck under her. =)

I was kissing her on the cheek this week and just looking at her, then out of nowhere, I felt a spray of saliva. She had totally sneezed on me. I suppose that is better than getting spit up in my mouth. heehee. Chris was playing with her and hoisting her up into the air and I guess he had his mouth open just right to catch her spit up as she was coming down. haahaa.

Week 14

In search of a dress for her Red Egg Party – there doesn’t seem to be many dresses out there! Grandma wants a fru fru dress so she can look all dolled up, but they look like Christmas dresses! So I’m on the lookout!

Her party was a lot of fun and I finally found a dress for her, and at all places – babies r us. ha! That was my last resort too, but they actually had a few dresses. I think stores are finally getting their fancy attire out there now. We had tights for her too. They fit everywhere except for the feet so they were all bunched up when we put her shoes on. Haahaa. Today was a very hot day, even in Pacifica, but at least there was a nice breeze near the ocean, where we were. She was the star of the party! Went by so fast! She got to meet everyone.

My goodness though, she went on a growth spurt these past 2 weeks! She’d been wearing her newborn clothes since she was born and I wasn’t prepared for it. And she outgrew those, along with some of the standby-next-stage clothes!! Aw man! We tried using size 1 diapers too, but they kept leaking on us (they were gigantic on her too!) – like they don’t have even padding/absorption or something. So we went back to the newborn ones since they still fit. All of a sudden, they were super tight on her! We just bought a pack of them, so hopefully, we can squeeze the use out of them til we’re done with them!

Week 13

Abby sure loves her sleep! She takes 1 nap in the morning and 1 or 2 naps in the afternoon! Last week, she was following the perfect schedule: eat, sleep, eat, sleep. But when we’re out, she’s always so curious about everything with her big eyes! We may have to get used to ducking out to a quiet place for her to nap. Haven’t really been able to tell how lack of naps affect her though, other than sleeping a whole bunch the next day! Although, she started sleeping a little bit later at night now. We used to put her down in her bed around 9, and the past wk or so, we put her down after bouncing her for a while and right when we put her down, her eyes pop open! doh! So she’s been sleeping around 11 or midnight.

It’s official – our air conditioning is broken! There’s another heat wave on the way, yikes!! We might just have to go out somewhere to enjoy some free AC!

So, grandma Tam called last week and mentioned she had gone shopping for Abby and went… uhh…a little crazy….after JUST telling me not to buy many clothes since they grow out of them so fast. She stopped by to drop off the clothes yesterday and she had a whole bag full!!! So funny. What great deals she found too! They’re mostly 18 months though, which will be perfect for next summer! Especially since we don’t have a lot of clothes past 9 months. We’ll have to find some winter clothes for her!
We had bought a halloween costume for her 2 months before she was born because there was a store going out of business and sold it for super cheap. Sooo…we just tried to gage it, but we took it out yesterday and it’ll be WAYYY big on her. Halloween’s next month! Oops. Maybe next year! LOL.

Week 12

What a week so far! Labor Day wknd was funfilled – Chloe’s birthday party on Saturday, rested on Sunday when the bay bridge was closed to do some local errands and dropped by Karli’s party to meet her family, and spent all day at the park on Monday! It was Abby’s first trip to a park and boy was it a long one! We didn’t leave til about 9pm ish. The youth and adults at church challenged each other to a softball game and we bbq’ed for lunch (and ended up making it for dinner too!). Weather was great: a little warm in the sun, but perfect in the shade. We had Abby covered up so she wouldn’t be exposed to too much sun, almost wished we had sunglasses for her too! Is she too young for them?
It’s so great seeing some of the kids interact with her. I wonder who will be her future Sunday School/Fellowship leader? ;)

Week 11

We celebrated cousin Chloe’s 1st birthday this week! She’s already one, wowee! We celebrated with thai food in Dublin =) Abby was a little fussy while we were there though – her system is still developing =( But Abby had fun visiting with a lot of new friends at Chloe’s birthday party.
We had a couple of outings this week like Safeway and Target, which helped with dealing with the heat! Our AC is broken so we were dying in the house on a couple of those afternoons. I think Abby’s sweat glands are in full motion now!
Abby picked up a new cry too. It’s whiny and short and from what I’ve read, it seems to be an “I’m tired” cry, which seems about right. We’re wondering how/when cries change like that. It just happened all of a sudden. She’s learning to sit in the swing a lot more now, which helps when Mama has to do stuff around the house! She’s even fallen asleep in the swing a couple times now, once even when it wasn’t swinging!

I also started going back to the gym, but I’m trying to figure out the best time of day to go. So far, I’ve tried to go early in the morning around 6am, but still gets a little tricky with the timing of Abby’s feedings and when she would wake up, etc. I’d have to go before Chris gets up for work and waking up is still pretty hard to do! Will probably try to go at night after Abby’s last feeding next week and see how that works.

Week 10

Abby and I had a nice visit to Daddy’s work on Thursday (ok, I had an ulterior motive – wanted a Mango Delight at Quickly =). Her tummy was rumbling before we left the house and ended up bringing a nice little gift with her for Daddy =) His office became a perfect little changing area for Abby! She was quite the star everywhere and drew everyone out of their cubes to see her! She was great and even had a couple of smiles.

Even though I’m with her 24/7, I can totally tell she’s getting bigger! Her hands, lips, and nose definitely got bigger this week! She’s got a huge smile now! And she’s beginning to fill into her skin. Some of her clothes are getting tighter and harder to put on. It’s amazing how fast they grow! We’ll probably be saying that for the rest of our lives … =)

Wow, today, she had a super blast while she was sitting on my lap. And … she continued to push a few more times! It’s funny how fast we look to the diaper to check for leaks now. This was the loudest blast yet though and sure enough, feeling around and got to her back!….oh no! Slimyness. She’s only leaked 1 other time up her back while in her car seat, but this time she was on me…and it was slimy and wet! Thought the stain wasn’t going to come out of her shirt, but it’s fine now after some major scrubbing =)

Week 9

We went back to church on Sunday and it was great to see everyone. Feeding Abby got a little tricky with timing. I ended up missing service and Sunday School, but little at a time right?… I’m sure we’ll get used to it, like sitting in the back of service with some of the other new parents =) Chris wants to stay for the softball game this coming Sunday too since the team made it to the playoffs (woohoo! go CUMC!) so we’ll see! I don’t know if she’s ready for all that dirt yet! Maybe it’s just me who’s not ready ;) haahaa.

She had her first 3/4s of a chuckle earlier this week…she’s almost to a full one! I think she might’ve done a full one in her sleep, but I don’t know if that really counts. We noticed her lips and nose got bigger this week also. I’ll be so sad when her spiky hair falls flat. She’s cooing a lot more now and chatting up a storm. When she throws in some smiles too, my heart just melts! It’s so cute!

Earlier this week, Abby had woken up around 5am. I heard a bodily noise coming from her on my way up and Chris says something like it was either a fart or a burp! So, I go to change her diaper and find poo! And she’s not done yet! Apparently, Chris had said it was either a fart or poo! I was tricked into changing the diaper (#2’s are for daddy =)!!

We usually have all the blinds closed during the day so I really have no concept of the weather outside, except for the occasional weather reports we happen to see. So we had packed up Abby in the car seat and all our stuff on Friday to make a trip to Costco, opened the garage door, and it was scorching hot, like 90s close to 100 degrees, and I had dressed Abby in long sleeves and pants! Oops! It was too hard to go back in to change. =) Good thing the AC was blasting in Costco!

Check out the pics of Baby and Daddy watching the niner game =) …
(he’s getting her started early!)

Week 8

This week, Abby had her 2 month doctor’s appointment, which included her first set of shots! She had 3 shots!! I thought I would be a mess, but it was ok. It was definitely hard to watch!, but it was ok. Abby did great though, that probably made it easier. She cried a bit, but was fine after a few minutes. It was a new cry that we hadn’t heard before. She is now 9 pounds and 22-1/2 inches long! And for those of you who were wondering, her head is only in the 15% of her age group. ha!

This week was also our 5th wedding anniversary (August 14). Time surely does fly! We ended up going to a Japanese restaurant in Dublin to celebrate. We took Abby with us too and she was fine when we got there. She cried a little though so we just took turns eating – like any other night =) It was nice to get out to have dinner as a family.

Week 7

Our friends Will and Debbie got married this week and we were able to make it out to the beautiful wedding on a golf course in Novato. It was super hot and Abby started crying just as the ceremony started! Bummer, but we were able to enjoy the end of the wedding =) They had a chinese banquet the next day too so we made it out to Oakland, had some yummy food, and celebrated with them. We had just gotten a parking space and we hear her pushing out some poop. Sure was a big one, but luckily, she didn’t get us too messy…good thing because we didn’t even think about a change of clothes!

Week 6

Week 2 with just Abby and mama at home this past week and it was nice that it’s cooled down a bit. We had some time to play with toys and do tummy time, which Abby doesn’t like so much! She can hold up her head pretty well though but just doesn’t like to be flat on the ground! She prefers to lie on mama’s chubbiness =) We got to visit the Tam family at the restaurant in Pacifica too and see Abby’s great-grandma, great-aunt, and 2 great-uncles! All these family references are getting so confusing! It’ll take a while for us to get used to them, both in English and Chinese!! It’s my grandmother’s first great grandchild so the visit was a lot of fun. This was probably our “biggest” outing thus far! We’re slowly getting out to see everyone. Can’t wait to catch up with our friends and family!

Week 5

Chris’ first week back at work and we made it through ok! He didn’t even bother setting the alarm the first day and Abby was right on time in waking him up for work =) She’s been great sleeping through the nights. I was wondering if I’d get bored at home by myself, but it’s actually pretty packed of stuff to do! If I’m not feeding or holding Abby to sleep, I’m getting bottles ready, sterilizing stuff, doing laundry, or other stuff around the house! I barely have time to squeeze in stuff I used to have time for!
We did have a nice visit from CC and Garrett, visiting from Seattle and a couple of doctor’s appointments. Actually, grateful that grandma came with us on our first day out to the doctor’s without daddy. And today, Abby and I went to Baja Fresh to pick up some food. SO glad she was sleeping through that trip, otherwise, I don’t know how I would’ve done it. You’d think they’d have more space in there! Definitely tough to manuever a stroller with all those tables/chairs/line dividers in there! We went to visit Miranda and Mitchell. Abby was great since her tummy was full. =) She loves the motion of the car, but not so much actually getting into the car seat!

Week 4

Time is just flying by! We’ve had a couple of quick outings to Costco and Babies R Us in the past couple of weeks and yesterday, Abby had her first photo session (just at jcpenney, nothing spectacular)! She was great, was awake the whole time, and didn’t cry – even when she was on her tummy. We’ll see how they turn out :) She’s growing up so fast though, just like everyone said, and she looks totally different than when she was born.

A couple nights ago, Abby slept for like six and a half hours! Chris and I both woke up and looked at each other in amazement, but also like “is that right??” Did you feed her this morning?? No, did you?? haahaa. We usually just let her wake us up and tell us when she’s hungry. I guess she slept through the night in her third week! Other nights, she’ll sleep for a block of 3-4 hrs which has been good for us. The late night feedings are still hard, but we’ve managed and it’s nice to take naps in the morning with her. Chris goes back to work on Monday so the true test will come then :)

I also didn’t know babies farted so much :) After Abby farts, she usually has a smile on her face too. haahaa. Like ok, I know I just farted, but aren’t I cute? So adorable!!

Week 3

Abby had her 2 wk doctor’s appointment yesterday and she’s gained a pound and a half since last week! Her cheeks are getting chubbier and her hair is starting to stick up! She’s growing so fast =(

We gave Abby her first bath today since her umbilical cord stump fell off. She was fine at first but when we poured some water over her hair, she didn’t like it so much anymore. We’ll see if she’ll be the swimmer like Chris!

The days are definitely starting to blend together. Can’t believe it’s July already. Chris goes back to work soon!

Abigail Kaelyn Lau

Meet our little Abby! She finally decided to come out on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21, 2009 at 9:46 pm, weighing 6 lbs 14 oz and 20.25 inches long. What a great gift for Chris =)

We were actually just released from the hospital on Wednesday evening because the doctors were afraid she might’ve been losing too much weight. But Abby is doing well and we are so glad to finally be at home and beginning our journey as a family. We’ve been trying to figure out her schedule and so far she likes to eat every 2-3 hours, but she’s starting to trend towards every hour! Suffice it to say, the nights have been a little getting used to.

Chris and I were definitely surprised on Saturday night/early Sunday morning when my “contractions” started. On Saturday, we had decided to order from a local pizza joint that was known for their “Preggo Pizza.” Story has it that pregnant women who eat it go into labor a few hours later. I wanted to try it to prove them wrong! So, Chris’ sister’s family: Vivian, Bill, and Cousin Chloe came over to share the order with us. Seemed to look and taste like any normal pizza. A few hours later, around midnight, my “stomach” started to hurt. After going to sleep, I woke up every hour feeling this stomach ache – which I thought was from all the grease and cheese of the pizza. So convinced, Chris went out to the drugstore at 5am to get me some medicine. After calling Kaiser a few times and feeling the pain get more intense, we finally realized they were contractions. OK, that was 7 hours later, but in my defense, the pain was not in the belly as I had imagined!!! There were some complications before she decided to come out, which definitely scared Chris and I for a bit, so we are feeling very blessed that she is actually here with us now. This story here ends when Abby came out at 9:46pm. =)
